Kagoshima Wagyu BLEW ME AWAY! – Dale Philip x Holafly
Dale Philip travelled from Kumamoto to Kagoshima on the Shinkansen bullet train, covering in just 45 minutes what would have been a 3-hour drive by car. After checking into the Sheraton hotel, he was pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a higher-floor room boasting stunning views of Sakurajima, the volcanic island just across the bay.
From there, Dale set out to explore. His first meal in Kagoshima was the local speciality Kurobuta, known as the “wagyu of pork.” Served tonkatsu-style, it turned out to be tender, juicy, and packed with flavour. The next day he visited Sengan-en, the historic estate of the Shimazu clan, where he enjoyed the traditional sweet Jambo Mochi, a chewy rice snack with a miso glaze once favoured by samurai.
But the highlight of the trip was at a yakiniku restaurant in Kagoshima city, where he tried authentic wagyu beef grilled right at the table. As expected, it was flawless – melt-in-the-mouth and bursting with flavour. To wrap up the day, Dale raided gacha machines and vintage shops, picking up unique video game magazines from the 1980s and 90s. By the end of his trip, he joked he might need an extra suitcase just for souvenirs.
