Dale Philip escaped the busy city of Fukuoka and took a ferry to Shikanoshima Island, a serene place steeped in history and far less crowded than nearby tourist spots. With only a few fellow travellers aboard, Dale rented a bike to cycle the island’s scenic 10 to 12 km loop, visiting Kinin Park, where the famous “Gold Seal” was discovered.

Along the way, Dale explored quiet beaches, sampled local sea snails called Sazae, and soaked in views from Shiomi Park. A late return meant catching a bus back, but the trip ended perfectly with a bowl of Fukuoka’s renowned tonkotsu ramen.
